Aloha and thank you for visiting my gallery.
I'm a self-taught artist. I do both painting and wood sculpture. I was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii; graduated in engineering from the University of Hawaii.; and work during the day as VP of Research and Development for a local, Hawaii-based, high-tech company. Art is my evening and weekend avocation.
I've always had an interest in art, and I dabbled in sculpting wood over many years, but about three years ago I sketched a design for a carving and discovered I could draw. Since then I haven't stopped and I work on my art every day for an hour or two on weekdays and more on weekends. It has been a period of discovery developing techniques and learning to see. My earlier experience with sculpting wood gave me an appreciation for form.
Attracted by the challenge of creating 3-D images in a 2-D format I eventually moved on to monochrome charcoal and pastel drawing, doing portraits for family and friends. Eventually, other people saw them, and approaced me to do commissioned portraits they gifted to their friends. Recently, I have begun adding color to my drawings, opening up a new phase of my work. Not having any training my work is guided by my sensibilities and what I find esthetically pleasing. My most successful work will convey a feeling or emotion.
I do a limited number of commissioned portraits. Contact me if you're interested. Artworks on this site not marked NFS ("not for sale") are available for purchase.
